Navigation and Map Reading
Want to learn how to use a proper map? Tired of your tech letting you down? Learn basic map and navigation skills. These walks are ideal for those who have limited or no prior knowledge. No specialist equipment required, just a curiosity to learn! These courses are designed to develop your confidence and are ideal for those who would like to consider a formal navigation qualification in the future.

“Introduction to Basic Navigation Skills” sessions will give you simple tools to create and follow a route on public footpaths. We will look at recognising footpaths on a map, where we can / cannot walk, useful symbols, measuring time and distance, creating a simple route. We will then put all of this into practice and will walk the route under supervision with lots of tasks to reinforce what we have learned.

“Application of Basic Navigation Skills” is a follow up to the Introduction session. We will recap basic skills, learn more about contours and their effect on timing, learn how to take a bearing on a compass and identify reference points. We will consider wider issues such as where to start, travel options, facilities etc. The group will plot their own walk of an agreed length from a given section of map. We will then go out and complete the route, with each person leading a short section and undertaking tasks to reinforce the skills we have learned.
